A fluorescent cellular fuel gauge to improve diabetes therapy
Genetically encoded sensors utilizing Fluorescence Resonance Energy Transfer (FRET) have the potential to revolutionize our understanding of intracellular physiology. Our team has pioneered the development and validation of AMPfret, a groundbreaking nano-sensor capable of monitoring ATP/ADP and ATP/AMP concentration ratios within living cells at physiologically relevant levels.
The betaFRET project represents our ongoing efforts to expand upon this innovation by creating an advanced AMPfret toolkit. This toolkit will feature sensors tailored to specific subcellular locations, along with a sophisticated FRET analysis pipeline designed to closely monitor intracellular energy states.
BetaFRET applies this technology to insulin-secreting cells under various stress and culture conditions, including micro-encapsulation. This will advance regenerative medicine through the development of microcapsule-based cell replacement therapies for treating diabetes. Thus, our technology has the potential to transform medical science and improve human health.
